Information:
Warm up (1.5 hours)
Using improvisation, visualization, tai chi and contemporary dance forms, I invite dancers to work on mind-body connection and versatility, and building community through active listening and engaging together in the studio. Participants will play with physicality through a series of movements meant to build coordination, efficiency, and groundedness, and get in touch with their senses, reflexes, and curiosity.
Creative Process research + discussion (3.5 hours)
In this portion of the workshop, I will teach sections of my solo Bunker + Vault.
Bunker + Vault is about the resilience, strength, and relentless pressure on the female body over generations and my experience within. The work was partly influenced by my archival research on the women residing at the The Clara de Hirsch home for Working Girls from 1899-1950 in New York City.
Alongside learning choreography and detailed physicality from the solo, we will talk about the intent of the movement and performance. I will give prompts and tasks from the process of building this solo and provide space for each participant to interpret it differently.
Disclaimer: This solo does include themes on generational trauma, reproductive trauma and repression of the female body, and these topics may come up in the workshop. I want to acknowledge that talking about these subjects and this work could be triggering for some. Cultivating an environment where each person’s agency is supported, and where we are all in open dialogue, is very important to me. I will be checking in with participants throughout our workshop, including offering breaks and time to talk.
